ABIA GOVERNOR OTTI APPOINTS PROFESSOR AMADIKE UGBOGU AS 9TH VICE-CHANCELLOR OF ABSU

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has approved the appointment of Professor Amadike Ugbogu as the ninth substantive Vice-Chancellor of Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu.
The appointment was announced on Saturday, October 31, 2026, in an official statement issued by the university’s Governing Council, following the conclusion of the selection process for a new head of the institution.
According to the statement, Ugbogu’s appointment followed a recommendation made by the Governing Council at its 161st regular meeting held on Thursday, October 29, 2026.
Governor Otti, who serves as the Visitor to the university, subsequently approved the recommendation, paving the way for the professor to take over the institution’s academic and administrative leadership.
The appointment is scheduled to take effect on Sunday, November 1, 2026, when Ugbogu is expected to assume office as the university’s ninth substantive Vice-Chancellor.
The announcement was signed by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Rt. Hon. Agwu U. Agwu, who confirmed the council’s recommendation and the governor’s approval.
Professor Ugbogu is a Professor of Biochemistry. His appointment comes at a significant period in the university’s leadership transition, following the conclusion of the tenure of the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ndukwe J. Okeudo.
The selection process began earlier in 2026, when the university’s Governing Council inaugurated a search team to identify qualified candidates for the position.
The search committee was established in accordance with Section 12(2)(b) of the Abia State University Law, which provides for the constitution of a team to identify and nominate suitable candidates for consideration by the Governing Council.
During the inauguration of the search team in July, the council emphasised the need for transparency, broad consultations and the selection of an academic with the experience and capacity to lead the university.
The committee was chaired by Professor Onwubiko Dike, with other members drawn from the university’s Senate and Congregation, alongside a representative of the Registrar.
The recruitment exercise followed an earlier announcement by Governor Otti that a substantive Vice-Chancellor would take over from November 1, 2026, as the tenure of the acting university leadership approached its conclusion.
The governor had also disclosed that advertisements for the position had been published and that the recruitment process was underway.
Professor Okeudo, who served as the university’s Vice-Chancellor, was recently honoured by members of the institution’s Senate during a valedictory session held on October 28, 2026.
During the ceremony, members of the university community acknowledged his contributions to institutional administration, staff welfare, academic programmes and infrastructure development.
The leadership transition is expected to usher in a new administrative phase for ABSU, one of Abia State’s major public tertiary institutions.
As the incoming Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ugbogu will be expected to oversee academic programmes, research activities, staff administration, student welfare and the implementation of policies aimed at improving the university’s performance.
He will also inherit responsibilities relating to institutional infrastructure, academic standards, funding, industrial relations and the strengthening of the university’s reputation within Nigeria’s higher education sector.
The appointment comes amid ongoing efforts by the Abia State Government to improve educational infrastructure and strengthen public institutions across the state.
Governor Otti has previously announced plans to upgrade tertiary institutions and address staffing gaps in the education sector, including the recruitment of additional teachers for public schools.
The new Vice-Chancellor’s administration will therefore face expectations from students, lecturers, non-academic staff, alumni and other stakeholders who want sustained improvements in teaching, research and campus facilities.
Attention will also focus on how the new university leadership handles existing institutional challenges, strengthens relations with staff unions and creates an environment that supports academic excellence.
Street News Reporters will continue to monitor Professor Amadike Ugbogu’s assumption of office, his plans for Abia State University and the administration’s efforts to improve academic standards and institutional development.
