FCT Police Rescue Two Abandoned Babies In Kurudu, Gwagwalada
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has rescued two babies abandoned in separate incidents in the Kurudu and Gwagwalada areas of Abuja.
The command, in a statement issued on Friday by its Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, said the babies were rescued following alerts from concerned residents.
According to the statement, the first incident occurred on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at about 5:30pm around Obodo Street, Kurudu. A resident identified as Innocent reportedly heard a baby crying and, upon checking, discovered a baby boy wrapped in cloth and abandoned inside a carton box.
Following the report, officers from the Kurudu Division, alongside personnel from the Juveniles and Women Care Department, were deployed to the scene and rescued the child.
The baby was taken to a nearby hospital for medical assessment and was found to be in stable condition. The police said the necessary documentation was completed before the child was handed over to the Social Welfare Department for further care.
Later that night, at about 9:40pm, another resident identified as Ibrahim reportedly heard a baby crying outside his gate in Gwagwalada.
Ibrahim, with the assistance of other community members, rescued the baby and reported the incident at the Gwagwalada Police Station at about 10:15pm.
Personnel from the Juveniles and Women Care Department subsequently took the baby girl to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital for medical examination. The command said she was receiving medical care pending her transfer to the Social Welfare Department.
The police said investigations were ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the abandonment of both children and identify their mothers or other relatives.
The command commended Innocent, Ibrahim and other community members for rescuing the babies and promptly notifying the authorities.
It also appealed to anyone with information that could assist in identifying the children’s mothers or relatives to report to the nearest police station.
