30 Years After Atlanta ’96 Olympic Gold, Kaduna Gov Uba Sani Fulfils Promise Of Land, Street Names For Amokachi, Babayaro
Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has approved land allocations and the naming of streets after Kaduna-born footballers who were members of Nigeria’s historic gold-winning squad at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, United States.
The development was announced by the Governor Uba Sani Media Centre in a post on X on Tuesday, marking 30 years since Nigeria’s historic triumph at the Games.
The Media Centre said the governor had approved the allocation of land and naming of streets in honour of Kaduna citizens who were part of the legendary “Dream Team,” including former Super Eagles stars Daniel Amokachi and Celestine Babayaro.
It described the gesture as recognition for players who “brought pride to Nigeria and Kaduna,” adding that it reflected a leadership that remembers, honours and rewards excellence.
The decision comes three decades after Nigeria’s remarkable Olympic football triumph and is aimed at recognising the former internationals for their contribution to one of the country’s greatest sporting achievements.
Amokachi and Babayaro, both natives of Kaduna State, were members of the Nigerian squad that defeated Argentina 3–2 in the final to win the country’s first-ever Olympic football gold medal.
Speaking at the land allocation ceremony, Babayaro recalled that the players had been promised land and street names following their historic achievement in 1996, but said the promises had remained unfulfilled for three decades.
“I went to the Olympics and won a gold medal. When we came back to Nigeria, the federal government and the state government blessed us with a plot of land and street named after us.
“It is 30 years today, we still haven’t seen it, but by the special grace of God, His Excellency has approved everything for us today,” Babayaro said.
Nigeria’s 1996 Olympic team, popularly known as the “Dream Team,” stunned the football world with a series of remarkable victories over some of the tournament’s strongest sides.
The team defeated Mexico in the quarter-finals before producing a famous comeback victory against Brazil in the semi-final. Nigeria then edged Argentina 3–2 in the final to secure the historic gold medal.
The triumph remains one of the most iconic moments in Nigerian sporting history and the first Olympic football gold won by an African nation.
Amokachi, popularly known as “The Bull,” was already an established international star at the time and played a key role in Nigeria’s successful campaign. He later continued his career in European football.
Babayaro, one of the youngest members of the squad, also played an important role in the historic campaign and went on to build a successful career in European football.
The Kaduna State Government’s decision is expected to give the former internationals a lasting form of recognition in their home state while preserving the memory of the 1996 Olympic triumph for future generations.
Thirty years after the historic victory, the gesture also marks the fulfilment of a long-standing promise to honour some of the Kaduna-born players whose performances helped create one of Nigeria’s most celebrated sporting memories.
