BANDITS KILL KADUNA VIGILANCE SERVICE DEPUTY COMMANDER, TWO OTHERS IN KADUNA
Suspected bandits have killed the deputy commander of the Kaduna State Vigilance Service (KADVS) in Zuntu, Kubau Local Government Area of Kaduna State, alongside two other members of the local security outfit.
The attack reportedly occurred on Sunday night when the armed assailants targeted security personnel operating in the Kubau axis of the state.
The killing has thrown members of the local security community into mourning, with the three vigilantes reportedly losing their lives during the attack.
The deceased deputy commander was said to be serving in Zuntu, where KADVS personnel have been involved in efforts to protect communities and support conventional security agencies in combating banditry and other forms of violent crime.
The development was disclosed on Monday by Usman, an open-source intelligence source monitoring security incidents in the region.
According to the security source, the KADVS deputy commander was killed together with two of his men after suspected bandits attacked them in the area.
The source described the incident as a major loss for the local security network, particularly given the role played by vigilante personnel in areas facing persistent attacks by armed groups.
The latest incident adds to the growing security concerns in parts of Kaduna State, where communities in several local government areas continue to face threats from bandits and other criminal groups.
Kubau Local Government Area has previously witnessed security operations targeting suspected bandits. Security personnel and local vigilantes have carried out patrols and surveillance operations along routes considered vulnerable to attacks.
In June 2026, members of the Kaduna State Vigilance Service reportedly intercepted and arrested suspected bandits along the Ikara–Zuntu route in Kubau.
In another operation around the same period, KADVS personnel reportedly captured eight suspected armed bandits during a midnight surveillance operation in the local government area.
The previous successes recorded by the vigilante service had highlighted the increasing role of community-based security groups in areas where conventional security personnel are often stretched by the scale of insecurity.
However, the latest attack demonstrates the risks faced by vigilantes who operate on the front lines of the fight against armed criminal groups.
Unlike conventional security agencies with broader resources and equipment, local vigilante groups often operate with limited manpower and resources while covering large rural communities.
The killing of the deputy commander and two other personnel is therefore likely to raise fresh concerns over the safety and preparedness of community security groups operating in vulnerable parts of Kaduna State.
The attack also comes amid continuing concerns over the activities of armed groups in parts of northern Nigeria, particularly in rural communities where residents remain vulnerable to killings, abductions, displacement and attacks on livelihoods.
Residents in affected communities have repeatedly called for stronger security operations and sustained government presence to prevent criminal groups from establishing control over rural areas.
The latest attack reportedly took place at night, highlighting the vulnerability of security personnel and communities during periods when armed groups can exploit difficult terrain and limited surveillance capabilities.
Authorities had yet to provide a detailed official account of the attack at the time of the report, including the identities of the deceased personnel, the number of attackers involved or whether security forces had launched an operation to track the perpetrators.
It was also not immediately clear whether any of the suspected attackers were killed, injured or arrested following the incident.
The Kaduna State Government and security agencies are expected to provide further details as investigations into the attack continue.
For families and colleagues of the deceased vigilantes, the incident represents another painful loss in the continuing battle against insecurity in Kaduna State.
The deaths further underline the dangers faced by community security personnel who have increasingly become an important part of efforts to protect residents in areas affected by bandit attacks.
Street News Reporters will continue to monitor developments and provide updates on the identities of the victims, official reactions and efforts to apprehend those responsible for the attack.
