Passenger Dies After Commercial Bus Crashes Into Median At Ojuelegba, Lagos
A passenger has died following a road crash involving a commercial Volkswagen bus at Ogunlana Junction, inward Ojuelegba, in the Surulere area of Lagos State.
The incident occurred on Sunday, September 27, 2026, when the bus, with registration number LND 130 XR, reportedly veered off the road and crashed into a median pole along the Ojuelegba axis.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), a male passenger jumped from the moving vehicle during the incident and sustained serious injuries.
The passenger was later confirmed dead following the injuries he suffered in the crash, LASTMA said.
The traffic management agency said preliminary security reports indicated that the driver may have been under the influence of alcohol and was allegedly driving recklessly before the accident.
However, LASTMA noted that the circumstances surrounding the suspected alcohol use had not been independently confirmed.
The crash occurred at Ogunlana Junction, an area with significant traffic movement, prompting LASTMA officials conducting routine surveillance in the area to immediately respond to the scene.
The officials secured the accident scene and removed the damaged commercial bus and the deceased passenger from the road.
According to LASTMA, the quick clearance of the accident scene was necessary to prevent another collision and ensure that traffic continued to move along the busy route.
Officers from the Area C Police Division in Ojuelegba also provided security at the scene while officials of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) evacuated the remains of the deceased.
The incident has renewed concerns about road safety and the dangers associated with reckless driving, driving after consuming alcohol and operating vehicles that may not be mechanically fit.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased passenger following the tragedy.
Bakare-Oki urged motorists, particularly commercial drivers, to ensure that their vehicles are properly inspected before embarking on journeys.
He advised motorists to pay particular attention to critical safety components including brakes, tyres, steering systems and other parts that could affect the safe operation of a vehicle.
The LASTMA boss also warned motorists against driving under the influence of alcohol or engaging in reckless behaviour that could endanger passengers, other motorists and pedestrians.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to responding quickly to road crashes and clearing accident scenes to reduce the risk of secondary collisions and further casualties.
LASTMA urged members of the public to report road crashes, broken-down vehicles and other obstructions through its toll-free emergency short code, 3367.
The circumstances surrounding the crash remain subject to further investigation, while the death of the passenger has added to concerns over road safety along busy Lagos routes.
